Overview

Restoran New Otard • 海鲜饭店, nestled in the heart of Bandar Puchong Jaya, Selangor, offers a genuine taste of Malaysian seafood cuisine. This unassuming seafood restaurant at 30, Jalan Helang 13, has quietly built a loyal following among locals and visitors alike who appreciate hearty, comforting dishes centered around fresh seafood and traditional Chinese flavors.

The culinary offerings here reflect a familiar, home-style approach. Signature dishes like Fish Head Curry, Singapore Mei Fun, and the ever-popular Ginger Onion Squid showcase the restaurant’s strength in seafood preparation. Vegetable accompaniments such as Kangkung and Claypot Egg Plant provide a well-rounded experience, balancing freshness with subtle seasoning. The Spinach Soup and Mapo Tofu add a comforting, warming touch to the spread, while the Four Bean Spicy Platter and Pumpkin Tofu add textural variety and depth.

Diners often praise the freshness of the seafood—crabs being a highlight, though not sampled in recent visits—alongside staples like the fried squid, which is known for its crisp batter and tender bite. While some guests have noted occasional inconsistencies in seasoning, the overall flavor tends toward a milder, less heavy-handed profile, making it a welcome change for those avoiding overly rich dishes. The sizeable portions of vegetable dishes like fried beansprout cater well to larger groups.

The atmosphere inside has evolved; recent upgrades include glass paneling and air conditioning, transforming it into a more comfortable dining space, suitable for both casual family meals and convivial gatherings. An interesting quirk that diners fondly recall is the unique restroom setup, adding a touch of charm to the visit.

Restoran New Otard’s appeal extends to a diverse audience, from family groups and seafood lovers to neighborhood regulars who appreciate straightforward, flavorful fare. The presence of Chinese Tea on the menu complements the meal perfectly, providing a gentle palate cleanser to balance the spices and richness of the main courses.

In sum, Restoran New Otard offers an accessible and authentic seafood dining experience rooted in Malaysian Chinese tradition. While the kitchen’s seasoning may err on the side of subtlety, the restaurant’s fresh ingredients, classic dishes, and renewed ambiance position it as a worthy visit for anyone exploring Puchong’s culinary scene.

Tofu was very tasty. Squid wasn’t the best. Veg pretty good. Curry quality is not consistent, better on previous visits.

Love the food here, mostly they are selling seafood. The fried noodles and fried rice is good. The most funny thing about this restaurant is the washroom where they have a joker contractor who out the toilet bowl in the center of it. Visit yourself to find out.

Used to stay around and patrons this restaurant. Today try them after some time. We ordered quite a few dish but some highlights are asam fish, fried squid, yam with pork, fried beansprout and hot plate tofu. Adam fish are ok. Fish are fresh and size are ok. Good amount of side dish typical to asam cooking. Only comment is the sauce are a bit underseason. Yam and pork are good. Very standard taste but potion are bit small for 10 people. Fried beansprout are ok but good things is huge serving. Fried squid are nice. Well crisp batter on the outside and squid are cooked nicely and not rubbery. Hot plate tofu are ok but feel a bit under season again. Overall the food somehow lack a bit seasoning. Is not that bad for us sometimes to eat something not too savoury. They are famous for their crab which we didn’t order this time. Perhaps if you are around and wanted to try this restaurant you can order it. Recommended.

The taste has improved from the last time I visited, so I assume the chef is new. The dining area has been walled with glass panels and air-conditioned since. They also serve my favorite, very smooth Tsingtao lager, China-made but with Belgian heritage due to its island of origin being a former Belgian colony. I have been dining here more frequently ever since compared to the past 10 years that I have been avoiding it altogether. Give this place a shot — try their crabs and noodles.

Had a delightful dinner at Restoran New Otard (non-halal), and it definitely delivered bold, satisfying Chinese-style flavors. Dry Chili Chicken – Stir-fried to perfection with crispy edges and just the right heat. The dried chilies and onions gave it a beautiful balance of spice and sweetness. Lala Kam Heong – Fragrant, spicy, and rich. The clams were fresh and well-coated in a flavorful kam heong sauce that paired excellently with rice. Sweet & Sour Fish – Crispy whole fish topped with a classic sweet and tangy sauce, garnished with pineapple and veggies. Great texture and flavor. Kangkung Belacan – Fresh and vibrant. The belacan gave it a nice umami kick without overpowering the greens. A must-have veggie dish. Prawn in Black Sauce – Juicy, perfectly cooked prawns drenched in a thick, slightly caramelized black soy sauce. Sweet, savory, and addictive—this was a table favorite. Generous portions, quick service, and rich wok hei in every bite. A satisfying place for a family-style meal that hits all the right notes. Highly recommended for those who love bold, non-halal Chinese seafood fare.
